A democracy cannot exist without the presence of a political party. This is clear from the function performed by the political parties. In case, there are no political parties then: Every candidate in the election would be an independent candidate. Any individual candidate does not have the efficiency to promise any major policy change to the people. In such a scenario, no one will be responsible for how the country is run. In the long run, only a representative democracy can survive. Political parties are the agencies that gather different views on various issues and present them to the government.

The  group of 77 (G 77) was established on 15 June 1964 by seventy seven developing countries signatories of the "Joint Declaration of the Seventy Seven Developing Countries" issued at the end of the first session of the United nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. Although the members of the G 77 have increased to 134 countries, the original name was retained due to its historic significance. The G 77 is the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations which provides the mean for the countries of the south to articulate and promote their collective economic interests and enhance their joint negotiating capacity on major international economic issues within the United Nations System, and promote south-south cooperation for development. Most developing countries did not benefit from the fast growth of the western economies in 1950s and 1960s. Therefore the 77 developing countries established the G 77 to get the following facilities:- 1. Actual and complete control over their natural resources. 2. More assistance in development. 3. Fair prices for raw materials. 4. Better market for their manufactured material.

Steps that should be taken to reform the political parties in India are:

  • A law should be made to regulate the internal affairs of political parties. It should be made compulsory for political parties to maintain a register of its members, to follow its own constitution and to have an independent authority.
  • It should be made mandatory for political parties to give a minimum number of tickets, about one-third, to women candidates. Similarly, there should be a quota for women in the decision making bodies of the party.
  • There should be state funding of elections. The government should give parties money to support their election expenses.
  • A strict law should be passed by the Court prohibiting any person with criminal charges from contesting in elections.

The sources of energy which have been in use since a long time are called conventional sources of energy. Coal, petroleum, natural gas, hydel energy, wind energy and nuclear energy are considered to be the conventional sources of energy. Additionally, firewood is also a conventional source of energy but its usage is now limited to kitchens in the rural parts of India.

(i) Land resources in India are primarily divided into
agricultural land, forest land, land meant for pasture and grazing, land for other non-agricultural use(such as housing, roads and industry) and waste land (rocky, arid and desert areas). In 2002-03, 54 per cent of the total land area was cultivable or fallow, 22.5 per cent was covered by forests and 3.5 per cent was used for grazing. The rest was waste land, with traces of miscellaneous cultivation.
Improper use of forest land has degraded the available land area and made conservation of forests difficult. Human activities such as deforestation, mining and quarrying have contributed to the slow growth rate of forests. Thus, land ’ under forest has increased by only about 4 per cent since
1960-61.

Print connected communities and people in different parts of India through newspapers, by encouraging public debates on important issues. New ideas emerged in Sambad Kaumadi published by Raja Ram Mohan Roy’s from 1821, which provoked debate on widow immolation, Brahmanical priesthood, idolatary, by printing ideas in every language spoken by ordinary people. In retalitation, Hindu orthrodoxy started Samachar Chandrika to oppose his opinions.
In north India, ulamas fearing colonial rulers will change Muslim personal laws, published Persian and Urdu translations of holy scriptures and printed religious newspapers and tracts. The Deoband Seminary published thousands of fatwas telling Muslim readers how to conduct themsleves in their everyday life and explaning Islamic doctrines.
Hindus also published religious texts in Vernacular languages. Ramcharit Manas of Tulsidas came out in Calcutta in 1810. Naval Kishore Press at Lucknow and Shri Venkateshwar Press in Bombay published numerous religious texts in Vernacular languages.

The religious texts reached a very wide circle of people encouraging discussions, debates and controversies within and among different religions.

Newspapers conveyed news from one place to another, creating pan-Indian identities. Thus, print not only stimulated publication of conflicting opinions, it also connected communities and people in different parts of India.
