<I>On 13th April 1919, the infamous Jallianwala Bagh incident took place. On that day, a crowd of villagers who had come to Amritsar to attend a fair gathered in the enclosed ground of Jallianwala Bagh. Being from outside the city, they were unaware of the martial law that had been imposed.General Dyer entered the area, blocked the only exit point, and opened fire on the crowd, killing and wounding hundreds of people. His objective was to ‘produce a moral effect’ to create in the minds of satyagrahis, a feeling of terror and awe. As the news spread, crowds took to the streets. There were strikes, clashes with police and attacks on government buildings. The government responded with brutal repression.

Soil conservation is a methodology to maintain soil fertility, prevent soil erosion and exhaustion, and improve the degraded condition of the soil.

The following are the methods of soil conservation:

1. Afforestation: In some areas the original vegetation cover has been removed such as the Siwalik Hills. In such areas afforestation and reafforestation is needed to hold the soil.
2. Controlled grazing: The number of cattle grazing the slopes should be according to the carrying capacity of pastures.
3. Terraced agriculture: Slopes must be cut into a series of terraces for cultivation so as to slow down inflow of rainwater.

Often they are shepherds, goatherds, or cattle herders. Sometimes nomads do stay in one place all winter, and only travel in the summer, or the other way around.

Print had a huge impact on its readers and hence the East India Company wanted to restrict the publications.
In the 1820s, the Calcutta Supreme Court passed certain regulations to control press freedom. After the revolt of 1857, the Englishmen demanded to clamp the local press and wanted to control the spread of nationalism.
The Vernacular Press Act which was passed in 1878 gave the government right to censor reports and editorials in the vernacular press.
In spite of these controls, the number of nationalist newspapers increased throughout the India. When Company attempted to suppress any nationalist expression, militant protests were launched. Print culture became one of the major driving forces behind the Indian freedom struggle.

◆High cost of borrowing leads to a major share of earnings. ◆Many times, the higher interest rate leads to the requirement to pay more than the earnings, which leafs to falling into a debt-trap. ◆Borrowers falling into debt-traps discourage more people from borrowing, and this is reducing development of the country. ◆Banks and cooperative societies lending to more borrowers will lead to higher incomes and many people could then borrow cheaply for a variety of needs like growing crops, set-up business or small-scale industries

Corruption is a major problem of india..approx in all government offices no work is done without bribe..rich people can easily make their work but poor people generally suffers. Corruption is a factor which is stopping the growth of india...thus,it is a major problem for indian democracy...

Gaurav Seth 6 years ago

Corruption has become a serious problem for India because it is one of the biggest obstacle that is hampering the development of the country. It also effects the economic growth of our country.
For example:

  • Misuse of powers by government officials for their personal and private gain makes the societal institutions totally corrupt. This evil reduces the oppurtunities for the weaker sections of the society.
  • It reduces the quality of the government services and infrastructure, which in turn increases the budgetry pressures on the government.
  • It also generates economic distortions in the public sector by diverting public investment into capital projects where bribes are given easily and are plenty.

<i>Answers: </i>The record of democracies is not impressive on these counts.

i)      Democracies often frustrates the needs of people and ignore the demands of a majority of its population.

ii)     (ii) The routine tales of corruption are enough to convince us that democracy is not free from this evil.

iii)    (iii) Democracies also give right to the citizens to choose their representatives. Whenever possible, people are able to participate in decision making. But their decisions are not often followed.

iv)   (iv) At the same time, there is nothing to show that non-democracies are less corrupt or more sensitive to the people.
