We can understand the necessity of political parties by imagining situation without parties:

  • Every candidate in the elections should be independent. So, no one will be able to make any promises to the people about any major policy changes.
  • The government may be formed, but its utility will remain ever uncertain.
  • No one will be responsible for how the country will be run.
  • Political parties do a series of functions.
  • Parties put foward different policies and programmes and the voters choose from them.
  • Parties play a decisive role in making laws for a country.
  • They form and run government.
  • Parties have to be responsive to people’s needs and demands. Otherwise people can reject those parties in the next election.

The British government arrested the two national leaders of India Dr Satya Pal and Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew for their involvement in the protests against the Rowlatt Act, which led to pervasive unrest among the people of Punjab. On April 13, 1919, on the occasion of Baisakhi, the people (men, women and children) of Punjab launched a peaceful protest against their arrest. The British military Commander General Dyer reached the park with soldiers and blocked the entrance of the park. Thereafter he ordered his soldiers to open fire. This firing lasted for ten minutes and killed thousands of people. The massacre ignited the anger of the Indians.

From the late 18 th century, the demand for foodgrains increased in Britain due to population growth. As urban areas expanded due to industrialisation, the demand for agricultural products went up, pushing up foodgrain prices.
Under pressure from landed groups, the government also restricted the import of corn. The laws allowing the government to restrict the import of corn were commonly known as the Corn Laws.
