Skill Development is the development of a particular skill with proper professional training. A trained person can get employment easily than non-skilled labour.

  • Suppose the government opens new schools to educate people, the teachers will be required to run the school.
  • A study conducted by the Planning Commission estimates that nearly 20 lakh jobs can be created in the education sector alone.
  • Similarly, if we have to improve the health situation, we need many more doctors, nurses, health workers, etc., to work in various parts of our country.

Internal trade is also known as domestic trade, and as the name suggests it is the trade of domestic goods within the confines of the geographical boundaries of a nation. So the buying and selling of either goods or services done within a country is the internal trade.

In such cases of internal trade, there is no levying of import/export taxes or customs duties. Only local government taxes will apply. These are goods domestically produced for domestic consumption only. Now there are two broad categories of internal trade, namely wholesale trade and retail trade. Here we will be focussing on the intricacies of wholesale trade.

The Khilafat Movement was launched by Muhammad Ali and Shaukat Ali. Gandhiji saw this as an opportunity to bring Muslims under the umbrella of a unified national movement. At the Calcutta Session of the Congress in September 1920, he convinced other leaders to start a Non-Cooperation Movement in support of Khilafat Movement.
The Khilafat Movement (1919-1924), was a pan-Islamic, political protest campaign launched by Muslims in British India to influence the British Government and to protect the Ottoman empire during the aftermath of First World War. The First World War had ended with the defeat of Ottoman Turkey.
There was a fear that the power of the spiritual head of the Islamic world (Khalifa) would be curtailed. To defend his power, a Khilafat Committee was formed in Bombay in 1919. The Khilafat leaders put pressure . upon the British Government to give better treatment to Turkey.

Land degradation is the human-induced loss of biodiversity, productivity, and ecosystem functions from terrestrial and aquatic environments. Land degradation is closely linked to climate change. Practices such as forest clearance and drying and burning of peatlands directly produce greenhouse gas emissions; land degradation is estimated to have been responsible for annual global emissions of 3·6–4·4 billion tonnes of CO2 in 2000–09. In turn, the effects of land degradation are exacerbated by climate change, as ecosystems alter in response to temperature changes and established management and restoration practices might no longer be viable. The combination of land degradation and climate change is predicted to reduce crop yields by 10% globally, and up to 50% in some areas. Such losses could lead to rises in migration, increasing the risk of conflict and political instability.

Non cooperation movement was a mass movement which was launched by Gandhi in 1920. It was a peaceful and a non-violent protest against the British government in India.
Programmes of the Non Cooperation movement were:

  • Indians were asked to relinquish their titles and resign from nominated seats in the local bodies as a mark of protest.
  • People had to resign from their government jobs.
  • People were asked to withdraw their children from government-controlled or aided schools and colleges.
  • People had to boycott foreign goods and use only Indian-made goods.

The main aim of the Non Cooperation movement was the demand of 'Swaraj' or the self government.

Soil types: The soil is classified on the basis of the proportion of particles of various sizes. The sizes of the particles in a soil have a very important influence on its properties. There are mainly three basic types of soils. These are:

  1. Sandy soil: If soil contains greater proportion of big particles it is called sandy soil. This soil contains very little humus and it is found in desert areas. A disadvantage of this soil is that it cannot hold much of the water in it because the water gets drained out through large spaces between its particles. Sandy soil provides good aeration to the plant roots and it could be ploughed very easily. Sandy soil is less fertile and it can be increased by adding humus to it in the form of manure. This soil cannot be used to make pots, bricks, toys etc.

  1. Clayey soil: If the proportion of fine particles is relatively higher, then it is called clayey soil. It contains mainly clay and very less humus. Clayey soil has very good water-holding capacity due to its very small and tightly packed particles. Clayey soil is very heavy and is more fertile than sandy soil. This soil is compact and sticky due to which the ploughing of this soil is very difficult. The water drains out very slowly through the tightly packed particles which causes water logging of soil and damage the crop plants. This soil is not able to trap enough air for the roots of the plants. The fertility of clayey soil can be improved by adding sand and humus to it. This soil is used in making pots, bricks, toys etc.
  2. Loamy soil: If the amount of large and fine particles is about the same, then the soil is called loamy. It is a mixture of sand, clay, silt and humus in correct proportion. The excess water can also drain out through it easily. This soil has adequate air spaces between its particles to hold sufficient air needed by plant roots. It is the most fertile soil.

Positive effects of globalisation:

  • Increased investments in Indian markets by MNCs have led to the growth of the Indian economy. In many fields such as automobiles, smartphones, soft drinks, fast foods and garments, MNCs have created a vast choice of products for consumers.
  • Local companies supplying raw materials to MNCs have developed and prospered. Many Indian companies such as Tata Motors and Ranbaxy have become multinational companies themselves.
  • Globalisation has opened many new opportunities for companies in the service sector, especially IT companies. These companies offer their cheap but efficient consulting services to many nations. This has also created millions of jobs in India.
  • Technology has been transferred to developing countries. It has enabled the production of quality goods in the international market.
  • Outsourcing is the major outcome of the globalisation process.

Negative effects of globalisation:

  • Growth has been witnessed only in few selected areas in the service sector such as hospital services, information and technology, and telecommunication.
  • To earn maximum profits, MNCs employed Indian workers at extremely low wages. Only in urban areas, the standard of living has improved. Their income and the quality of consumption also increased. This has led to inequalities of income in the country.
  • To deal with the pressure of competition from MNCs, many Indian companies have begun to employ workers on a temporary basis so that they do not have to pay the workers for all 12 months of a year. This has resulted in companies making large profits, but workers not getting their share of benefits.

(iii) Efforts have been made to overcome the nutritional problems in the country and considerable progress has been achieved.
(iv) Smallpox has been completely eradicated and malaria, T.B., leprosy, filaria, etc. have also been controlled to a large extent.
(v) There has been a large increase in the number of hospitals, doctors, nurses and compounders and the extension of health facilities in the country.
(vi) Special attention is being given to the extension ’ of health facilities in the rural areas and some progress has also been made in this direction.
Inspite of this progress, the health facilities in India are quite low keeping in view the requirements of the country and their standard is also very low. Speedy and effective measures are required for its improvement.
