The events that occurred in February 1848 in France had brought the abdication of the Monarch and a Republic based on Universal male suffrage had been proclaimed.
The idea supported by the liberals are given as follows:
1.Politically the term liberalism emphasized the ideas of government by consent, the end of autocracy and clerical privileges and establishment of an elected parliament.
2. Economically liberalism meant freedom for the markets and abolition of state restrictions on the movement of goods and capital.
3.Socially the liberals laid stress on the abolition of discrimination based upon birth.

Nationalism refers to the feeling of oneness and common consciousness that emerges when people living in a common territory share the same historical, political and cultural backgrounds. People may be speaking different languages (as in case of India) but the love for their nation keeps them together.

Utopian refers to a vision of society that is so ideal that it is unlikely to exist. A French artist in 1848 by name, Frederic Sorrieu prepared a series of four prints visualizing his dream of a world made up of 'democratic and social Republics'.
The first print shows the people of Europe and America, men and women of all age and social classes, marching in a long train or line, and offering homage to the statue of Liberty as they pass by it. During the time of French Revolution, Liberty was personified as female figure. In the print, the torch of Enlightenment can be found in one hand, and the Charter of Rights of Man on the other hand
In Sorrieu's utopian vision, the peoples of the world are grouped as distinct nations, identified through their flags, and national costumes. Sorrieu created the image to unify the disintegrated states into a nation state under a democratic constitution.

Italy was formally united into a nation in 1861. The greatest problem in the unification of Italy was its fragmentation into several political units, each under a different authority. Italy, before its unification, was divided into seven states: Sardinia-Piedmont, ruled by an Italian princely house; Kingdom of the Two Sicilies; Papal state; Lombardy and Venetia, ruled by Austrians; Tuscany, Modena and Parma. Sardinia-Piedmont took the responsibility of uniting Italy under its ruler, King Victor Emmanuel II and Chief Minister Count Cavour. Italian states had to fight several wars against Austria, Spain and France to drive them out of Italy.

- Different people have different developmental goals.
- What may be development for one mat may not be development for another it may be destructive for another.
- Income is the most important component of development, besides seeking more income, one way or other, people also seek things like equal treatment, freedom, security and respect of others.
- Similarly, for development, people look at mix of goals.

Frederic Sorrieu was a French artist who in 1848 prepared a series of four prints visualizing his dream of a world made up of ‘Democratic and Social Republics’. The distinct feature of these prints were the representations of men, nations and allegories. In the first of his print, we can see men and women marching across the statue of Liberty to offer homage. The statue holds a torch of enlightenment and the Charter of the Rights of Man. And finally, the remains of the absolutist institutions can be seen broken and shattered on the Earth indicating the end of conservatism and absolutism.

Unification of Germany -- 1871.
Under the leadership of chancellor of Prussia, Bismarck unification of Germany happened after a serious of wars against Austria and France who were the biggest hindrance for the unification.
Unification of Italy -- 1871
Unification of Italy was led by king and chancellor of Piedmont-Sardinia after victourious wars against Austria. Pope lost his power over Rome and other Papal states which marked the Unification of Italy.
Unification of Britain -- 1707
England and Scotland were separate earlier even though it was under the same monarchy. Unification of Britain happened after a union was formed by both which led Britain to become a united political system.

2. Federalism has two levels of government:
