Romanticism referred to a cultural movement which sought to develop a particular form of national sentiment. They focussed on emotions, intuition and mystical feelings. Their effort was to create a sense of a shared collective heritage, a common cultural past as the basis of a nation. It describes the creation of the terms and their relation to each other, stating that romanticism helped to create nationalism. Romanticism, a movement in all of Europe, took the previous conventions and dismissed them, placing importance on emotion. However, in Germany, Romanticism had a nationalistic message as well.

The term itself was coined in the 1840s, in England, but the movement had been around since the late 18th century, primarily in Literature and Arts. In England, Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats, and Byron typified Romanticism. This led the Romantics to view things with a different spin than the Enlightenment thinkers. 1. Giuseppe Mazzini was an Italian revolutionary. Born in Genoa in 1807, he become a member of the secret society of the carbonari. As a young man of 24, he was sent into exile in 1831 for attempting a revolution in Liguri.
2. He subsequently founded two more underground societies first, young Italy in Marseilles, and then, young Europe in Berne.
3. Mazzini believed that God had intended nations to be the natural unit of mankind. So Italy could not continue to be a patchwork of small states and kingdoms. It had to be forged into a single unified republic within a wider alliance of nation.

- The unification of Italy is the result of dedication, contribution and effort of three great leaders Mazzini, Cavour and Garibaldi.
- During 1830s, Giuseppe Mazzini had tried to unite Italy. He formed the secret society called Young Italy. But both the uprising in 1831 and 1848 failed.
- Even the ruling elites also wanted a unified Italy which would offer economic development and political dominance.
- The unification of Italy was a result of many wars. Chief Minister Cavour made a tactful diplomatic alliance with France and Sardinia-Piedmont succeeded in defeating the Austrian forces in 1859.
- A large number of armed volunteers under the leadership of Giuseppe Garibaldi joined the unification movement.
- In 1860, they marched into South Italy and the Kingdom of the Two Sicily succeeded to drive out the Spanish rulers with the help of local people.
- In 1861, Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed as king of United Italy.

The process of unification of Britain:
1. Before the eighteenth century, there were different ethnic identities with its own culture and politics-English, Welsh, Scot, and Irish.
2. As the English nation's wealth and power increased, its influence over other island nations also increased.
3. English Parliament had taken the power from the monarchy in 1688 after a long conflict. It became an instrument in building the nation-state of Britain, with England at its center.
4. United Kingdom of Britain was established through the Act of Union in 1707 between England and Scotland.
5. Scotland eventually got suppressed by the English politically and culturally as the British Parliament was dominated by the English.
