Bhoodan Movement was started by Vinoba Bhave. It was a land reform movement in India which included the voluntary gifting of the land by the landowners to the landless labourers.

Bhoodan Movement led to the ‘Gramdaan’ when people of a village voluntarily donated all lands of the village for redistribution of land on an equitable basis. This was the beginning of the ‘Gramdaan’.

Explain Decentralisation in India

Yogita Ingle 5 years, 7 months ago

Three characteristics of language policy in India are as follows.
(i) Our Constitution did not give the status of national language to any one language. Hindi was identified as the official language but there were many safeguards to protect other languages. Besides Hindi, there are 21 other languages recognised as Scheduled languages by the Constitution.

(ii) States too have their own official languages. Much of the government's work takes place in the official language of the concerned state. The Central Government responded by agreeing to continue the use of English along with Hindi for official purposes.
(iii) Promotion of Hindi continues to be the official policy of the Government of India. But the Central Government can't impose Hindi on states where people speak a different language.

Mahatma Gandhi believed in the ideology of Swedeshi ie, to use everything that is made in India. During the colonial period, the British had discouraged the Indian textile industries and promoted the British made goods especially the textiles. This lead to the closure of several Indian hand loom industries and many weavers were hit hard. Gandhi and other leaders in order to promote swedeshi goods encouraged the people to spin yarn and weave Khadi. This hit the British textile industries hard and provided work to many Indian artisans and weavers.

Ernst Renan was a  French philosopher who delivered a speech at the University of Sorbonne in 1882. In that speech he outlined the idea of what makes a nation. According to Renan nations are formed by a common language, race, religion or territory. It is the culmination of a long past of endeavour, sacrifices and devotion. A nation does not take any interest in annexing or  holding onto another Nation against its will.

Nations are important because their existence guarantee Liberty. The liberty of individuals would be lost if they are no nations.

Yogita Ingle 5 years, 7 months ago

Sericulture is the process of cultivating silkworms and extracting silk from them. The caterpillars of the domestic silkmoth (also called ‘Bombyx mori’) are the most commonly used silkworm species in sericulture. Other types of silkworms (such as Eri, Muga, and Tasar) are also cultivated for the production of ‘wild silks’. An image detailing the different types of silkworms is provided below.

The War created a new economic and political situation :
(i) It led to a huge increase in defence expenditure which was financed by war loans and increasing taxes, customs duties were raised, and income tax introduced.
(ii) Through the war years, prices increased – doubling between 1913 and 1918 – leading to extreme hardships for the common people.
(iii) Villagers were called upon to supply soldiers, and the forced recruitment in rural areas caused widespread anger.

(iv) The First World war gave a boost to the Indian industries. Since textile industries in Britain began to supply goods related to the War like uniforms, shoes and racksags, the Indian industries took advantage of the void and bagan to manufacture the cloth.

Yogita Ingle 5 years, 7 months ago

A political party is a group of people who come together to contest elections and hold power in the government. They agree on some policies and programmes for the society with a view to promote the collective good.

A political party tries to convince people that its policies are better than others’ policies. They try to win elections so that they can implement their policies.

Frederic Sorrieu was a French artist who in 1848 prepared a series of four prints visualizing his dream of a world made up of ‘Democratic and Social Republics’. The distinct feature of these prints were the representations of men, nations and allegories. In the first of his print, we can see men and women marching across the statue of Liberty to offer homage. The statue holds a torch of enlightenment and the Charter of the Rights of Man. And finally, the remains of the absolutist institutions can be seen broken and shattered on the Earth indicating the end of conservatism and absolutism.
He thus visualised countries as nation states, end of monarchy and democracy.
