Khushi 4 years, 11 months ago

(i) The Rowlatt Satyagraha had been a wide spread movement, no doubt, but it was still limited mostly to cities and towns. (ii) Mahatma Gandhi now felt the need to launch a more broad-based movement in India. (iii) But he was certain that no such movement could be organised without bringing the Hindus and Muslims closer together. One way of doing this, he felt, was to take up the Khilafat issue. Therefore, he decided to support this issue.

Civil disobedience movement was initially started in 1930 but was called off in 1931 by Gandhiji himself. Then, it was restarted in 1932 once again but later, gradually lost its momentum by 1934. It had far reaching impact on Indians. When Gandhiji manufactured salt on boiling sea water on 6th April 1930, thereby violating salt law, thousands of people especially women marched out of their homes, manufactured salt and demonstrated it in front of British salt factories. Then in the countryside, peasants refused to pay chawkidari taxes and British revenue and socially boycotted landlords, taluqdars and moneylenders. In the tribal villages, the tribal men encroached into the Reserved forest areas and restarted using the forest for their livelihood and fulfilling traditional rights. Political processions and demonstrations emerged from all across the country and different groups of people except some, actively participated in the movement.

Apart from in the political and social spheres, Gandhiji had also made significant contributions towards conservation of resources. He believed that "Resources are available for everyone's need, but not for anyone's greed". He considered greedy and selfish individuals and exploitative nature of modern technology the root causes for constant depletion of resources and strongly criticised the idea of mass production. Mass production, according to him, had to be replaced necessarily by production by the masses (from machine to man).
