It show property of catenation due to small size, unique electronic configuration and great strength of carbon carbon bonds.

Adrija Saha 3 years, 4 months ago

Catenation occurs most readily with carbon, which forms covalent bonds with other carbon atoms to form longer chains and structures. This is the reason for the presence of the vast number of organic compounds in nature. Carbon is most well known for its properties of catenation

Jiya Singh 3 years, 4 months ago

Carbon shows the property of catenation because carbon have valency 4 so it can easily combine with other carbon atoms.

Brief procedure: Activity 10.1 asks us to observe the image on a large spoon. Observation: The image at the concave side of the spoon is real, inverted and diminished. When we move away from the spoon it also becomes smaller. The image at the convex side of the spoon is virtual, erect and diminished. When we move away from the spoon rate of reduction in size is more. Explanation: A spoon acts as a concave mirror from its front side, and as a convex mirror from the back side. When we look at a spoon our distance from the spoon is around 1 foot which is more than the focal length of the spoon. Here the image is smaller. Concave side: The image is real and diminished. image formation on concave side of spoon Convex side: The image is virtual and diminished. image formation on convex side of spoon Use: Concave mirror form concentrated real image when an object is at infinity. We can use this property to start a fire. Next: How a concave mirror can start a fire. activity 10.2. See also: List of activities from chapter 10.

Resistance R1 of the bulb is given by the expression, Supply voltage, V = 220 V Maximum allowable current, I = 5 A Rating of an electric bulb P=10watts Because R=V2/P According to Ohm’s law, V = I R Let R is the total resistance of the circuit for x number of electric bulbs R=V/I    =220/5=44 Ω Resistance of each electric bulb, R1=4840Ω ∴ Number of electric bulbs connected in parallel are 110.

Based on the properties, elements have been divided into two; Metals and Non- Metals. They have an important part in our daily life. Both metals and non-metals are useful in different ways. There is a large number of metals and non-metals in the world. Metals are elements that can conduct electricity and are malleable and ductile. They are hard and shining in nature. Examples are iron, aluminium, copper, silver and gold. It is widely used in our daily life for a large number of purposes. It is used for making cooking utensils, buses, cars, etc. Non-metals are good conductors of electricity. They are neither malleable nor ductile and are also brittle. Examples are carbon, sulphur phosphorus, etc. Carbon has two allotropes, diamond and graphite. Diamond is used as jewellery and graphite is used in pencil leads. All metals and non-metals have similar properties. But, the properties of non-metals are opposite those of metals. This chapter deals with the properties, reactivities and basic examples of metals and non-metals.
