The basic functions performed by living organisms to maintain their life on this earth are called life processes.
Nutrient: A nutrient can be defined as a substance which an organism obtains from its surroundings and uses it as a source of energy or for the biosynthesis of its body constituents.
Example: carbohydrates and fats are the nutrients which are used by the organism mainly as a source of energy.
Proteins and mineral salts are nutrients used by organism for the biosynthesis of its body constituents like skin, blood, etc.
Nutrition:
Nutrition is the process of intake of nutrients (like carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals, vitamins and water) by an organism as well as the utilization of these nutrients by the organism.

Various parts of the brain and their functions are given below:
|
Part of brain |
Functions |
|
Cerebrum |
Governs intelligence, thinking, memory and other mental abilities, voluntary actions, sensations, emotions and speech. |
|
Hypothalamus |
Coordinates messages from the autonomous nervous system, controls involuntary actions, as well as the sexual and emotional behaviour and forms an axis with the pituitary. |
|
Thalamus |
Functions as major coordinating center for sensory and motor signaling. |
|
Midbrain |
The midbrain controls reflex movements of the head, neck and trunk in response to visual and auditory stimuli. It also controls the reflex movements of the eye muscles, changes in pupil size and shape of the eye lens. |
|
Cerebellum |
Responsible for precision and fine control of voluntary movements as well as maintaining posture and equilibrium of the body. |
|
Pons |
It regulates respiration. |
|
Medulla |
Contains vital centre for controlling blood pressure, respiration, swallowing, and salivation, vomiting, sneezing and coughing. |

Biogas is produced from waste which is further used for the growth of plants. The various applications of biogas are:
- Biogas is usable in generating electricity.
- Biogas helps in reducing the global climate change.
- Biogas can generate one billion kilowatt hours of electricity.
- This is quite enough to power millions of homes.
- This is done by converting cow waste into methane with the help of anaerobic digestion process.

Valency is defined as the combining capacity of an atom or a molecule. There are different ways to determine the valency of a given atom and they are:
- Octet rule: According to the octet rule, a compound is said to be stable when the outermost shell of the compound is having eight electrons. If the number of electrons in the outer shell is between one to four, the compound is said to have positive valency. For compounds with electrons four, five, six, or seven, the valency is determined by subtracting the electron from eight. All noble gases except for Helium have eight electrons.
- Periodic table: Periodic table consists of elements that are arranged in such a way that, the valency of a given element can be determined. Metals in column 1 have a valency of +1 while the noble gases in column 18 have a valency of 0 and are inert.
- Valency from the chemical formula: This rule is based on the octet rule and by observing the combining of an element, the valency can be determined.
Therefore, these are the ways or methods that are used for calculating the valency.

Limewater Test - To check for carbon dioxide in your breath. Using lime water is a fun and easy way to test for the presence of carbon dioxide. The exhaled carbon dioxide is used to produce a precipitate of calcium carbonate with the lime water. The most effective way to test for CO2 is to bubble the gas through "limewater", a diluted solution of calcium hydroxide (slaked lime). When you bubble carbon dioxide through the solution, it forms a solid precipitate of calcium carbonate – chalk or limestone. Calcium carbonate is insoluble in water. Carbon dioxide reacts with calcium hydroxide solution to produce a white precipitate of calcium carbonate. Limewater is a solution of calcium hydroxide. If carbon dioxide is bubbled through limewater, the limewater turns milky or cloudy white.

- Cell is an autonomous self-replicating structure that forms the structural, functional and biological unit of all living organisms.
- The movement of dissolved molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration is called diffusion.
- A group of specialized cells with similar structure, working together to perform a common function is called a tissue.
- Nutrition characterized by the ability to use simple inorganic substances for the synthesis of more complex organic compounds, as in green plants and some bacteria is called autotrophic nutrition.
- Autotroph is an organism capable of synthesizing its own food from simple inorganic substances, using light or chemical energy.
- A type of nutrition in which energy is derived from the intake and digestion of organic substances, normally plant or animal tissues is called heterotrophic nutrition.
- Heterotroph is an organism that cannot synthesize its own food and is dependent on complex organic substances for nutrition.
