An oxidizing agent (oxidant), gains electrons and is reduced in a chemical reaction. It is also known as electron acceptor. The oxidizing agent is usually in one of its higher possible oxidation states as it will gain electrons and be reduced.

Examples of oxidizing agents are:

  • potassium nitrate
  • halogens
  • nitric acid

A reducing agent (reductant), loses electrons and is oxidized in a chemical reaction. It is typically in one of its lower possible oxidation states and is known as an electron donor. A reducing agent is oxidized because it loses electrons in the redox reaction.

Examples of reducing agents are:

  • formic acid
  • the earth metals
  • sulfite compounds

The flow of energy in food chains is unidirectional. The energy which passes to the herbivores does not come back to the autotrophs. The energy that is captured by the autotrophs does not revert back to the Sun. Therefore, in the food chain, the energy moves progressively through various trophic levels. This energy is no longer available to the previous trophic level. Thus, the flow of energy in a food chain is unidirectional.

The pesticides enter a food chain and subsequently get into our body by the following way:

  • Pesticides are sprayed on the crop plants to protect them from the attack of pests. These pesticides when washed away into the soil or water bodies get absorbed by the plants.
  • When plants are consumed as food by man or other animals, the pesticides enter the food chain. Since the pesticides are non-biodegradable, these chemicals get accumulated progressively and enter our body.

A group of cells with similar structure and a specific function are collectively called as tissues.

The human heart is the central part of the circulatory system. This muscular organ functions by pumping blood throughout the body.

The major types of tissues found in the human heart include:

  1. Connective tissue: It binds, connects, supports, and separate tissues or organs from each other.
  2. Epithelial tissue: It forms a protective covering all over the body including the internal organs.
  3. Muscle tissue: Heart is made up of a special type of muscle tissue termed as cardiac tissue. These are involuntary and striated muscles which help the heart to pump the blood throughout life.
  4. Nervous tissue: It controls and coordinates the pumping of the heart.
