First term is a and common difference is d.

 

Sum of first and third terms is 10.

 

t₁ + t₅ = 10

 

==> a + (1 - 1) * d + a + (5 - 1) * d = 10

 

==> a + a + 4d = 10

 

==> 2a + 4d = 10

 

==> a + 2d = 5    ---- (1)

 

Ten Terms except for the first term is 99 and except for sixth term is 89.

 

S₁₀ - First term = 99

 

==> 10/2[2a + (10 - 1) * d] - a = 99

 

==> 5[2a + 9d] - a = 99

 

==> 10a + 45d - a = 99

 

==> 9a + 45d = 99

 

==> a + 5d = 11       ------- (2)

 

Subtract Equation (1) and (2).

 

a + 5d - a - 2d = 11 - 5

 

==> 3d = 6

 

==> d = 2

 

 

Place d = 2 in (2).

 

==> a + 5d = 11

 

==> a + 10 = 11

 

==> a = 1

 

Third term of the progression.

 

t₃ = 1 + (3 - 1) * 2

 

t₃ = 5

=> x ( x+6 ) + 3 ( x+6 )

=> ( x+6 ) ( x+3 )

Comparing with quadratic equation

Ax²+Bx+C=0

A=(b-c),
B=c-a,
C=a-b

Discriminate when roots are equal

D=B²-4AC=0

D=(c-a)²−4(b-c)(a-b)=0

D=(c²+a²−2ac)-4(ba-ac-b²+bc)=0

D=c²+a²−2ac-4ab+4ac+4b²-4bc=0

c²+a²+2ac-4b(a+c)+4b²=0

(a+c)²-4b(a+c)+4b²=0

[(a+c)-2b]²=0

a+c=2b

Question : Factorise 2x^2 - x + 1/8 =0 using splitting the middle term.

Answer :

Given Quadratic equation:

2x²-x+1/8 = 0

Multiply each term by 8 we get

=> 16x² - 8x + 1 = 0

Splitting the middle term,we get

=> 16x² - 4x - 4x + 1 = 0

=> 4x(4x-1)-1(4x-1)=0

=> (4x-1)(4x-1)=0

=> 4x-1=0 or 4x-1 = 0

=> 4x = 1 or 4x = 1

=> x = 1/4 or x = 1/4

Therefore,

Roots of the quadratic equation are 1/4 , 1/4

x = √6 + x --- From Eqn. (i)

On squaring both sides,

⇒ x² = 6 + x

⇒ x² - x - 6 = 0

⇒ x² - 3x + 2x - 6 = 0

⇒ x(x-3) + 2(x-3) = 0

⇒ x = 3 Or x = -2

But x is a natural number.
∴ x = 3

Assume that the length of all edges of the cube=x units
Formula for volume of cube=x³ cube unit
Due an occurrence that the cylinder is within the cube &it touches all the vertices faces of the cube.
Therefore radius of the base of the cylinder & cone & height of cylinder of a cone=x
Volume of the cylinder=π×{x/2}²×x=22/7×x³/4
11/14x³ cube unit
Volume of cone should be=1/3π{x/2)²×x=11/42 cubic unit
Required ratio=volume of cube:volume of cylinder:volume of cone
=x³:11/14x³:11/42x³=42:33:11
