We will take a right circular cone and remove a portion of it. There are so many ways in which we can do this. But one particular case that we are interested in is the removal of a smaller right circular cone by cutting the given cone by a plane parallel to its base. To show this equation to be true, we can simply expand the left-hand side of the equation and see what we get: (a+b)2−2ab ............ =(a+b)(a+b)−2ab .......... =a2+ab+ab+b2−2ab .......... =a2+2ab+b2−2ab ............ =a2+b2 ..........
