A modal is a type of auxiliary (helping) verb that is used to express: ability, possibility, permission or obligation. Modal phrases (or semi-modals) are used to express the same things as modals, but are a combination of auxiliary verbs and the preposition to. There are ten types of modal verbs: can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must, ought to. Can (or cannot/can't) shows ability, in the sense of knowing how or being able to do something. In informal situations, it expresses permission, in the sense of being allowed to do something. There are ten common modal auxiliary verbs and they are 'can', 'could', 'will', 'would', 'shall', 'should', 'may', 'might', 'must' and 'ought'.

We don’t get any information regarding the past history of the lady in red as we know about Horace’s past. Her whole personality remains wrapped in mystery until the end. Only when the identity of the real lady of the house is unfolded, we come to know that she is a thief. She is the real culprit. The lady in red comes there with the only purpose of committing a theft in the house like Horace. She cleverly decamps with the jewels while Horace is sent to prison.
The lady in red is gifted with a rare personality. She is full of confidence. She acts like a perfect actress presenting herself as the lady of the house. Her gestures, confidence and convincing power are enough to convince Horace. He turns out quite a novice in understanding and judging the lady in red and her motive. She dominates the proceeding. Horace only proves a puppet in her hands. She exploits his fear of going to prison. She makes him open the safe without his gloves. She convinced him that she needes those jewels to wear them to a party that night. Horace willingly hands over the jewels and she decamps with them. Only when the grey-haired, sharp-tongued woman appears as the real lady of the house, we come to know that the lady in red was a professional and crafty thief much smarter than Horace.

Excess of everything is bad. Mrs. Pumphrey pampered trickie too much. She was an exceedingly pampering woman; her pampering spoilt her pet dog, Tricki. She had provided all types of facilities to the dog such as day bed, night bed, favourite cushions, toys and rubber rings, breakfast bowl, lunch bowl, supper bowl, etc. In her love for him, she let him overeat; she did not make him do exercise.
As a result Tricki became exceedingly fat. His health suffered. He had to be admitted to James Herriot’s clinic where he treated him by not giving him much to eat and making him do lots of physical exercise.

Apartheid- It was the policy of social discrimination followed in South Africa. This policy divided the people and labelled them on the basis of their skin colour. Under this system, blacks were forbidden from living in white areas. Trains, buses, hotels, hospitals, schools and colleges, libraries, cinema halls, public toilets, etc. were all separate for white and blacks. In South Africa, white did not give equal rights to the native Africans.
India had raised this issue first time in United Nations General Assembly in 1946.
It was due to the constant moral support of India and the continuous struggle of Dr. Nelson Mandela, the policy of apartheid has been abolished in South Africa in 1990.

Ausable was a secret agent who handled Max cleverly. He told Max that he would complain to the hotel authorities. There was a knock and he said it is the police. Max asked Ausable to send the police back and in the meantime Max would go and wait on the balcony — and this is how Ausable got rid of Max.

In the excitement of theft, Hari Singh forgot about his education. He forgot that what education would have given him in his future that theft would never give. Although the money which he got after stealing was more at the present time the money and respect which he could have earned in his future because of education would have been countless. The greed of just a few hundred rupees brought him a great loss.

In the excitement of the theft, the thief had forgotten about his routine. Sitting under the shelter of the clock tower, he ruminated that Anil would probably have given him two or three rupees to go to the cinema. Because he deserted him, he couldn’t cook his meals and run to the bazaar to buy groceries. He would never be able to learn to write whole sentences any more.
