Shifting cultivation is the cultivation in which some selected part of forest are burnt and crop are sown in ashes. Europeans considered it harmful - 1) They think that it can burn their use timber or other trees of forest. 2) They find difficult to calculate tax. 3)They think that new tree cannot be sown on that land after shifting cultivation.

Yogita Ingle 6 years, 10 months ago

In shifting agriculture certain parts of the forest are selected, cut and burnt. This is done in rotation. Then seeds are sown in the ashes after the monsoon. The crop is ready to be harvested by October-November.
This cultivation is carried on for two to three years. After this, the land is left fallow for about 12 to 18 years. This allows the forest to grow back again. Cultivators grow different crops on this land. It varies from region to region. In central India and Africa, it could be millets, in Latin America, maize and beans and in Brazil, manioc.
This practice of shifting agriculture was considered by European foresters as harmful.

  1. They were of the opinion that any land that was cultivated in this manner could not produce trees which would yield timber for railways.
  2. They also argued that burning of forests was a dangerous activity. The flames could spread and burn valuable timber.
  3. In addition, the government found that calculation of tax was a problem with shifting agriculture as the cultivators did not stay on the same piece of land for more than three years. The government, hence, decided to ban shifting agriculture. Many people lost their means of livelihood and were displaced from their homes.

The April Theses were first announced in a speech in two meetings on 16 April 1917 (4 April according to the old Russian Calendar), basing itself on Trotsky's Theory of Permanent Revolution. They were subsequently published in the Bolshevik newspaper Pravda. In the Theses, 1)Lenin Condemns the Provisional Government as bourgeois and urges "no support" for it, as "the utter falsity of all its promises should be made clear." 2)He condemns World War I as a "predatory imperialist war" and the "revolutionary defensive" of foreign social democrat parties, calling for revolutionary defeatism.3)Asserts that Russia is passing from the first stage of the revolution—which, owing to the insufficient class consciousness and organization of the proletariat, placed power in the hands of the bourgeoisie—to its second stage, which must place power in the hands of the proletariat and the poorest sections of the peasants.4)Recognizes that the Bolsheviks are a minority in most of the soviets against a 'block of all the petty-bourgeois opportunist elements, from the Social-Cadets and the Socialist Revolutionaries down to the Organizing Committee5)Calls for abolition of the police, the army, and the bureaucracy and the salaries of all officials, all of whom are elective and displace-able at any time, not to exceed the average wage of a competent worker.

The Indian Constitution has ensured the independence of the judiciary like in all modern democracies. Independence of judiciary ensures no influence or interference from government or the party in power. As per the Indian Constitution, the judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts are appointed by the President of India. However, the President consults the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of Supreme Court. Hence, the judiciary is independent of influences and intereference from the government.
