February Revolution:

  •  22nd February: Factory lockout on the right bank took place.
  •  25th February: Duma was dissolved.
  •  27th February: Police Headquarters ransacked. Regiments support the workers. Formation of Soviet.
  •  2nd March: The Tsar abdicated his power. The Soviet and Duma leaders formed a Provisional Government for Russia.

The February Revolution had no political party at its forefront. It was led by the people themselves. Petrograd had brought down the monarchy, and thus, gained a significant place in Soviet history. Trade Unions grew in number. With no monarchy to rule the Russian future would now be decided by the constituent assembly which was going to be elected on the basis of universal adult suffrage.

October Revolution:

  •  16th October: A Military Revolutionary Committee was appointed by Soviet.
  •  24th October: The uprising against the provisional government begins. Military Revolutionary Committee controls the city by night and ministers surrender. The Bolshevik gained power.

The October Revolution was primarily led by Lenin and his subordinate, Trotskii and involved the masses who supported these leaders. It marked the beginning of Lenin's rule over the Soviet, with the Bolsheviks under his guidance. The Bolshevik party after the revolution came to be known as the Russian Communist Party.

Karl Paul Reinhold Niebuhr was an American Reformed theologian, ethicist, commentator on politics and public affairs, and professor at Union Theological Seminary for more than 30 years. Niebuhr suggested that for social ethics the normative moral action guide should be justice instead of agape love, which he calls as the regulative principle. Agape love assumes the possibilities of consistent selflessness but justice recognize and admits the inevitable claims of the self.

India has a monsoon type of climate as its climate is influenced by the monsoon winds. The monsoon type of climate is based on distinct season and season of reversal of monsoon winds. This happens due to the differential heating of land and water bodies and pressure situations. When air moves from high pressure area over the southern Indian Ocean, it crosses equator and turns right to the low pressure situation over the Indian sub continent. These winds blow over the warm oceans, pick up moisture from them resulting into rainfall in India.

The President of Zimbabwe is the head of the state of Zimbabwe. In 1987, Robert Mugabe becomes the president and he revises the Constitution to make himself Executive President. President Mugabe is popular but also uses unfair practices in elections. Opposition party workers are harassed, public protest and demonstration against the government are declared illegal, both print and electronic media are controlled by the government. The government has pressurised judges to give verdict in favour of the government. The example of Zimbabwe shows that popular approval of the rulers is necessary in a democracy, but it is not sufficient. A democratic government cannot do whatever it likes, simply because it has won the election. This is the reason for which Zimbabwe is discussed here

Rainfall depend upon various climatic features. For example, the presence of mountains affect the distribution of rainfall. The moisture laden winds when strike the windward side of the mountains. Causes rainfall. The places located on the leeward side of the mountains get scarce rainfall. This is the reason that Mumbai receive more rainfall than Pune. North eastern India get most of its rainfall in this manner. The Eastern side of the Western Ghats or Ladakh also get scarce rainfall. Heavy rainfall is recorded in hilly and forested regions. Forested regions like Assam, the Ganga delta and the Western Ghats receive abundant rainfall. The regions falling first in the path of moisture laden winds receive more rainfall than the places that fall last. For example, Patna receive more rainfall than Delhi from the Bay of Bengal branch of Monsoon winds. The unpredictability of the monsoon along with phenomena like monsoon troughs, El-Nino and depressions lead to uneven distribution of rainfall. Of late, climatic changes because of global warming have resulted in unpredictable rainfall pattern all over the world including India.

Domestic Services by Women. In India, most women generally look after domestic affairs like cooking of food, washing of clothes, cleaning of utensils, looking after children, etc. They are not treated as economic/productive activities.

This is mainly because of two reasons:

(i) Such activities are performed out of love and affection and hence their valuation is not possible.

(ii) They do not add to the flow of goods and services in the economy.

Causes of the French Revolution:

Despotic rule of Louis XVI: He became the ruler of France in 1774. He had drained the financial resources of France in wars. For the cost of his regular extravagant expenses, he increased taxes which were paid by the third estate.
Division of French society: The French society was divided into three estates; first, second and third estates, respectively. Among them, First and Second Estates had 10 per cent of the total population and were the clergy and nobles. They enjoyed all privileges. Rest of the 90 per cent was of the third estate, which paid all kinds of direct or indirect taxes. This kind of discrimination led to the revolution by the third estate.
Rising prices: The population of France had increased. This resulted into more demand of food grains. So the price of bread rose rapidly, which the poor could not afford to buy. So the gap between the rich and poor widened.
Inspiration of the philosophers: Philosophers like John Locke, Jean Jacques Rousseau and Montesquieu propagated the ideas of having a society where people would enjoy freedom, equal laws and equal opportunities. Their ideas inspired the people of France to realise their dreams.
Role of middle class: The 18th century witnessed the emergence of social groups termed as middle class, who earned their wealth through an expanding trade of the manufactured goods, being exported. There were other professionals also like lawyers, administrative officials who were all educated. They believed that no group in society should be privileged by birth.

Role of philoshopers:

(i) The philosophers played an important role in the French Revolution. They inspired the common mass of France with their revolutionary ideas and prepared them to fight against injustices.
(ii) They did not believe in the doctrine of the divine and absolute right of the monarch. In his Two Treatises of Government John Locke refuted this doctrine strongly.
(iii) Rousseau carried the idea forward proposing a form of government based on a social contract between people and their representatives.
(iv) In The Spirit of the Laws, Montesquieu proposed a division of power within the government between the legislative, the executive and the judiciary.
(v) The ideas of these philosophers were discussed intensively in salons and coffee-houses and spread among people through books and newspapers. These were frequently read aloud in groups for the benefit of those who were illiterate. Thus, the philosophers contributed a lot in bringing of the French Revolution.

In the eighteenth century, many persons who belonged to third estate and earned their wealth through overseas trade and manufacturing goods, were termed as middle class. People of Middle class were educated and believed that no privilege should be given by birth, rather position of a person in society should be merit based.
