The cutting and gathering of the matured food crop is called harvesting. In harvesting, the crops like wheat or rice are cut close to the ground by hand using a cutting tool called sickle. This is called manual harvesting. Harvesting is either done manually or by using a machine called harvester. Threshing is done after harvesting. The process of beating out the grains from the harvested crop plants is called threshing. Threshing is done with the help of a machine called combine. A combine is a huge machine which cuts the standing cereal crops in the field, threshes it and separates the chaff from the grain in one operation. A combine is a combined harvester and thresher.

In practice, the method of cross-multiplying means that we multiply the numerator of each (or one) side by the denominator of the other side, effectively crossing the terms over.We can use cross-multiplication to solve an equation with 2 ratios and find the value of the variable. We can use cross-multiplication to find the value of a variable in an equation involving ratios, as shown in the example.

Biofuels are designed to replace gasoline, diesel fuel and coal, which are called “fossil fuels” because they are made from animals and plants that died millions of years ago. Biofuels are made mostly from plants that have just been harvested.

Under the ryoti system, indigo cultivation was done by the ryots. The planters made the ryots to sign a contract or an agreement (satta). Sometimes, they pressurized the village headmen to sign the contract on behalf of the ryots. After signing the contract, the ryots got cash advances from the planters. But after taking the loan, the ryot was committed to grow indigo on at least 25% of his land holding. Seeds and drills were provided by the planter. The cultivators prepared the soil, sowed the seed and looked after the crop.

- Sowing:
After the preparation of the soil, the seeds can be sown into it. The process of scattering seeds in the soil for growing the crop plants is called sowing. The good quality seeds are sown into the soil to obtain high yield. Seeds can be sown in the soil either by hand or using a seed drill.
- Traditional Tool: The tool used traditionally for sowing seeds is funnel shaped. The seeds are filled into the funnel, passed down through two or three pipes having sharp ends which pierce the soil and place seeds there.
- Sowing by hand: The sowing of seeds by hand is called broadcasting. The seeds are taken in hand and gradually scattered in the entire ploughed field. This method is not good as there is no proper spacing or proper depth at which the seeds are sown by hand. The seeds scattered on the surface of the soil for sowing can be picked up and eaten by birds.
- Seed Drill: It is an implement used for sowing seeds with the help of tractors. By using a seed drill, the seeds are sown at correct depth and correct intervals. The seeds sown with a seed drill are in regular rows and get covered by soil. This prevents the seeds to be picked up and eaten by birds.

Advantages of ploughing:
- The loose soil allows the plant roots to penetrate freely and deeper into the soil so that plants are held more firmly to the ground.
- The loose soil allows the roots of the plants to breathe easily.
- The loose soil helps in the growth of worms and microbes present in the soil as they help in turning and loosening of soil.
- Ploughing also uproots and buries the weeds standing in the field and thereby suffocates them to death.
- The loosening and turning of soil during ploughing brings the nutrient rich soil to the top so that the plants can use these nutrients.

Microbiology is the study of a great variety of living organisms which are invisible to the naked eye like bacteria and fungi and many other microscopic organisms. Although tiny in size these organisms form the basis for all life on earth. These microbes as they are also known as produce the soil in which plants grow and the atmospheric gases that both plants animals use. For about 3 billion years since the formation of earth microbes were the only lives on earth. Microorganisms have played a key role in the evolution of the planet earth.
