Humans use huge amounts of water not only for drinking and washing but also in the process of production. Water for agriculture, industries, generating electricity through reservoirs of dams are the other usages. Increasing population, rising demands for food and cash crops, increasing urbanisation and rising standards of living are the major factors leading to shortages in supply of fresh water either due to drying up of water sources or water pollution.

1. You read that one of the main functions of the judiciary is ‘upholding the law and Enforcing Fundamental Rights’. Why do you think an independent judiciary is necessary to carry out this important function?
Ans. The independence of the judiciary allows the courts to play a central role in ‘upholding the law and Enforcing Fundamental Rights’ as
- It ensures that there is no misuse of power by the legislature and the executive. Anyone can approach the courts if they believe that their rights have been violated.
- Only an independent judiciary are able to protect our Fundamental Rights. The judiciary should be above all prejudices.
- Politicians or other socially powerful people cannot use their power to change any judgment.
- Every citizen whether big or small has equal rights and he/she cannot be discriminated against any other considerations except his being Indian citizen.

(3p-2)-5(6p-1)=2(p-8)-6(7p-4)
3p - 2 - 5(6p) - 5 (-1) = 2p - 2 (8) - 6(7p) - 6 (-4)
3p - 2 - 30p + 5 = 2p - 16 - 42p + 24
-27p + 3 = -40p +8
-27p + 40p = 8 - 3
13p = 5
p = 5/13

Pythagorean triplets:
For any natural number m > 1, we have (2m) ² + (m2 – 1)²= (m2 + 1)² . So, 2m, m² – 1 and m² + 1 forms a Pythagorean triplet.
I) Let 2m = 6
m = 3
m²+ 1 = 3² + 1= 9 + 1 = 10
m²- 1 = 3 2 - 1 = 9 - 1 = 8
check:
6 ² + 8² = 36 + 64 = 100 = 10²
Hence, the triplet is 6, 8 & 10
ii)
Let 2 m = 14
m = 7
m² + 1 = 7²+ 1 = 49 + 1 = 50
m²- 1 = 7² - 1 = 49 - 1 = 48
check:
14² + 48² = 196 + 1304 = 2500 = 50²
Hence, the triplet is 14, 48, and 50

Consider a polygon with n vertices. Each vertex can be connected to the n-1 other vertices but two of those connections (to the two adjacent vertices) form sides of the polygon, not diagonals. So there are n-3 diagonals emanating from each of the n vertices giving n(n-3) diagonals. This formula overcounts because it counts each diagonal twice: once for each vertex on the diagonal. Divide by two to compensate for the overcounting giving n(n-3)/2 diagonals.
You can set n(n-3)/2 = 20, expand and solve the quadratic equation by factorization but this is time consuming and inefficient. Way faster is to simply plug in the answer choices for n and see which one satisfies the equation: n(n-3) = 40. Ans: n=8.
20=(n^2-3n)/2
40=n^2-3n
n^2-3n-40= 0
Splitting the middle term,
n^2-8n+5n-40=0
n(n-8)+5(n-8)=0
(n-8)(n+5)= 0
So there are two values for n
n-8=0 or n+5=0
n = 8 or n = -5
n can’t be negative
So n = 8
