Two ways in which you think advertising affects issuses of equality in democracy are:

  • Since a product has to be advertised repeatedly by a company, only large companies are able to advertise their products. Those companies which are not able to bear the cost of advertising their products have to sell their products in local and weekly markets.
  • Advertisements make people believe that only branded packaged advertised products are better, which is not necessarily true. The fact is that the quality of a product does not have any relation with its packaging. The shift to packaged products has negatively affected the sale of many loose products.

During the summer season the Indian mainland gets intensely heated up creating low pressure. High pressure area is created over the Indian Ocean due to the differential heating of the land and the sea. Because the winds blow from high pressure to low pressure areas, the South West Monsoon winds blow from Sea towards the Indian mainland. When moisture laden winds strike the Western Ghats and the mountains of north eastern parts of the country, they shed their moisture causing rainfall on the places lying on the windward side of the mountains. The Monsoon is also aided by the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone or Monsoon trough near the Equator where winds from northern and southern hemisphere merge. During winters, the Indian mainland begins to cool down creating high pressure areas. Thus the north eastern winds blow from land and hence do not cause enough rainfall. They cause rainfall over the Coromandel Coast during winters.

Children growing up in slums experience a childhood that often defies the imagination of both the ‘innocent childhood’ proponents and the ‘universal childhood’ advocates. The slums typically lack proper sanitation, safe drinking water, or systematic garbage collection; there is usually a severe shortage of space inside the houses where the children live, and no public spaces dedicated to their use. But that does not mean that these children have no childhood, only a different kind of childhood that sees them playing on rough, uneven ground, taking on multiple roles in everyday life, and sharing responsibilities with adults in domestic and public spaces in the community.

Democratic government can be less efficient than a non-democratic government when it comes to decision making.

Because a non-democratic government does not need to arrive at consensus among a diverse set of people.

But democracy functions on the basis of deliberation and negotiation and hence decisions are often delayed.

Decisions taken in non-democratic government on time need to assess if those decisions are acceptable or are they solving people’s problems. So it does not mean that a democratic government is less efficient.

A democratic government is more transparent than a non-democratic government. A citizen has the right to know the processes which were followed while taking a decision in a democratic government.

MLAs are elected by the people. They represent people. Each state in India has a legislative assembly. Each state is divided into different areas called constituencies. From each constituency the people elect one representative who then becomes an MLA. These MLAs belong to different parties. A political party whose MLAs have won more than half the number of constituencies can be said to be in a majority. The political party that has majority is called the ruling party. All other parties are called the opposition.
