During this period many changes were witnessed in religion.Peoples belief in the divine was sometimes personal and at other times collective. Other changes occurred in what we call 'Hinduism' today,as Brahmans earned a lot of respect in society. There was an emergence of the idea of Bhakti of a loving, personal deity that devotees could reach without the aid of priests or elaborate rituals.

The devotional worship of God with the ultimate object of attaining moksha, Le,
Salvation is known as Bhakti. The word Bhakti has taken its roots from Bhaj meaning 'to adore'. The Bhakti movement took its roots from a movement in the Southern India in the 6th century, originated against the growing tides of Buddhism and Jainism.
Causes for the Origin:
i.A number of evils have been erupted in Hinduism. The purity of heart was lost and empty rituals had taken place.
ii.The advent of Islam also challenges the authority of Hinduism in India. Islam with its liberal equality of status among its followers, opposition to idol worship and concept of one God posed a big challenge for Hinduism. To advert this catastrophe, the Bhakti move came to the forefront.
iii.In medieval period the social religious reformers condemned in unequivocal terms the glaring evils prevalent in the Hindu Society. These reforms played a critical role in birth and the development of Bhakti Movement.
