The impact of the Sufi and the Bhakti movements on the Indian society were:
The Bhakti and Sufi movements showed to the people that the existence of God could be experienced under the guidance of a guru. Priests or the ulemas are not required to feel the presence of God. Thus many people began to question the authority and domination of their religion by the religious authorities.
The Bhakti saints crticised the existence of rituals in the Indian society.
Both the Sufi and the Bhakti movements emphasized on the feeling of universal brotherhood and religious tolerance. As a result, an environment of mutual love and respect was created among different sections of society.
Since the Bhakti and the Sufi saints preached their teachings in the local language. This led to the development of the local and the vernacular languages.

Alvars were the saints who devoted to Vishnu and Nayanars were saints devoted to Shiva. These two sects emerged during the 7th and 9th centuries. The followers of these two sects were from all castes including those who were considered untouchables.
They were critical of Buddhists and Jainas. They would roam from place to place singing songs in praise of their Gods.

Sufism is a mystic tradition of Islam and includes a range of practices and beliefs dedicated to Allah, divine love and cultivation of heart. The Sufis in the medieval period practised love and compassion towards all other beings. They rejected the elaborate rituals and codes of behaviour (based on shariat) demanded by the Muslim scholars.
