The letter "x" is often used in algebra to mean a value that is not yet known. It is called a "variable" or sometimes an "unknown". In x + 2 = 7, x is a variable, but we can work out its value if we try! A variable doesn't have to be "x", it could be "y", "w" or any letter, name or symbol.

Temperature of the room in the beginning = 50oC
Temperature after 1 hour
= 50oC -1 × 3oC = 50oC - 3oC = 47oC
Similarly, temperature of the room after 15 hours
= 50oC - 10 × 3oC = 50oC - 30oC = 20oC

  1. Total correct answer given by Reema was 10 but she obtained 20 marks.
1 correct answer of 3 marks then
    Marks for the correct answers given = 3 x 10 = 30
    Marks cut for the incorrect answer = 20 - 30 = - 10
As, -1 mark is given for every incorrect answer.
    Hence, total incorrect answer = 101 = 10
  2. Total correct answer given = 10
Total incorrect answer given = 10 taken from the first part of the question.
Therefore, the total question asked in the test (examination)
    = 10 + 10 = 20
