The term "atom" can be traced back to ancient Greece. The word "atom" is derived from the Greek word "atomos," which means "indivisible" or "uncuttable." The concept of atoms as fundamental, indivisible particles was first proposed by the ancient Greek philosopher Leucippus and his student Democritus in the 5th century BCE. They hypothesized that all matter is composed of these tiny, indivisible particles called atoms, although their understanding of atoms was quite different from our modern atomic theory.
