Earthworms and microbes help to increase the fertility of the soil by decomposing the waste(organic) material in the soil. Some microbes like rhizobium help in fixing the nitrogen. The nitrogen present in the a atmosphere cannot be used by the plants directly so these bacteria help in fixing the nitrogen. The rhizobium bacteria is generally found in the root nodules of the leguminous plants. Hence the earthworms and microbes help in increasing the quality of the soil. Therefore they are called friends of the farmers.
