An oscillation is said to be forced when it is in response to an excitation; otherwise it is called free vibration (see EIGENTON, RESONANCE, STANDING WAVES, SYMPATHETIC VIBRATION). Oscillations whose FREQUENCY lies within the audible range are heard as SOUND. Compare: VIBRATION.
