Food additives are chemicals that are added to food in small quantities for
example, preservatives are added to food to prevent the growth of
microorganisms so that the food can be stored for a longer period.
Examples of preservatives are sodium sulphite(Na2SO3) and benzoic acid
(C6H5COOH). In ancient times, honey was used as a natural preservative.
Antioxidants are also added to food to prevent the oxidation of fats and
oils by oxygen in the air. Dyes are added to food to improve its
appearance.
