The FSH secretion by the pituitary gland stimulates the ovarian follicles to secrete estrogen. Estrogen stimulates the proliferation of the endometrium of the uterine wall. After ovulation, the remaining cells of ovarian formed are stimulated by LH to develop corpus luteum which secrete a large amount of progesterone. Progesterone is essential for the maintenance of endometrium, for implantation of the fertilized ovum and other events of pregnancy.
