No, they can't absorb from the atmosphere. But , a type of bacterium called rhizobium that lives in the root of legumes plant can absorb the nitrogen from the surrounding and convert into soluble form in which plant can absorb the nitrogen. Example of legumes are - peas , pulses , gram , etc.
