Raj Kumar Shukla was a poor peasant from Champaran. Deeply disturbed at the injustice of the landlord system in Bihar, he reached to see Gandhiji during the 1916 annual convention of the Indian National Congress in Lucknow. Somebody had told him that Gandhiji could help him in the matter. So he approached Ghandjiji to take him to Champaran along with himself but Gandhiji had several appointments at that time. So he refused to go to Champaran with Raj Kumar Shukla immediately. Shukla did not lose his patience. He accompanied him everywhere. Shukla followed him to his ashram also. He begged Gandhiji to fix a date to proceed to Champaran. Gandhi ji was Impressed with him, Gandhiji told him to meet him in Calcutta on a fixed date. Shukla arrived there and from there they both proceeded to Champaran.
