    Because it was two or three feet deep at the shallow end and nine feet deep on the other end. The drop was gradual.

    The YMCA pool was safer as compared to the Yakima River as the depth of the river was unknown and there were more chances of getting drowned there. On the other hand, the YMCA pool was two or three feet deep and the safety guards were also present there. Hence, there were fewer chances of being drowned.

    Because the pool wasn't so deep, it was onle 9 feet deep in middle and lesser deep at the starting. So he thought it as safe.
