The symbol for the element sodium is written as Na.This symbol is derived from the Latin word for sodium carbonate, which is natrium(Na). For sodium S cannot be used as its abbreviation because S denotes sulphur. The Modern symbols of elements are derived from their English or Latin names which is made up of either first letter or first and second letter or the first letter and letter appearing later in the name. The Latin name of sodium is Natrium. Thus, its symbol is Na.
