Mrs Pearson and Mrs Fitzgerald are two contrasting characters. Actually, they are foil to each other. Mrs Pearson is a pleasant looking woman in her forties. She appears to be confused and worried. Mrs Fitzgerald is older. She is heavier and has a ‘strong and sinister personality’. Mrs Pearson is timid and gentle. Mrs Fitzgerald is liberated and bold. She smokes and plays with cards.
