Certain metal surface reacts with oxygen and moisture which is present in the air and gets coated with it by the formation of iron oxide in case of iron.

This process is known as rusting of the iron. This reduces the tensile strength of the iron and also causes destruction of the iron. For this purpose there are a large number of processes which are used to prevent rusting.

One of the process is the galvanizing on the iron. Painting is one of the cheapest method to prevent rusting of the metal.
