The peddler of rattraps had a habit of visualising the world as a giant rattrap which people he knew fall prey to. While travelling one day , he takes shelter at the house of an old man who gives him supper and shows him kind hospitality. He shows the peddler the money that he had recently earned by selling the milk of his cow. Afterwards when the peddler gives in to his greed and steals the money when the old man is absent, he realises that he has been trapped himself. Later in the night, he is again sheltered at the house of the ironmaster at the Ramsjo mills by his daughter. The ironmaster at first had mistaken him for an army captain he knew, but when he realizes his mistake he expresses his suspicion of him being a thief. The peddler proves his suspicions wrong in a letter he writes to the daughter, where he returns the money of the old man. In the letter, he confesses that at the ironmaster's place, he was again tempted by the world's rattrap but this time he had managed to escape it.
