Conservation of linear momentum gives, m 1 v 1 +m 2 v 2 =0 m 1 v 1 =−m 2 v 2 v 1 = m 1 −m 2 v 2 Given, m 1 =10g=( 1000 10 )kg, m 2 =1 kg, v 2 =−5m/s ∴v 1 = 10/1000 +1×5 or v 1 =500m/s.
