If the number of electrons in the outer shell is between 1 to 4 the compound is said to have positive valency. For compound with electrons 4,5,6, or 7 the valency is determined by subtracting the electrons from eight

U can use electronic configuration Like in oxygen 2,6 which add up to 8 which is its atomic no. The general e.c. should be following 2,8,8 like that So it's missing two electrons So it will be -2
