2N means to molecules of Nitrogen atom. N^2 two atoms of nitrogen in its one molecules. N^2 shows that two atoms are bonded with covalent bond, and it become nitrogen gas whereas 2N doesn't show any bond, it just show two numbers of nitrogen only.
