उस समय का तिब्बती समाज बड़ा ही सरल था। वहाँ के सीधे सादे लोग अजनबियों का भी स्वागत खुले दिल से करते थे। लेकिन डाकुओं द्वारा या अन्य लोगों द्वारा किसी की हत्या करना आम बात थी।
