A starfish feeds by first extending its stomach out of its mouth and over the digestible parts of its prey, such as mussels and clams. The prey tissue is partially digested externally before the soup-like "chowder" produced is drawn back into its 10 digestive glands. Star fish feeds on aquatic animals covered by hard shells of calcium carbonate . After opening the shell , the star fish pops out its stomach through its mouth to eat the soft animal inside the shell . After eating the animal , the stomach goes back into the body and the food is slowly digested.
