Mitochondria is covered by a double membrane. Outer membrane is highly porous while inner membrane has a lots of folds These folds create a large surface area for ATP {Adenosine Triphosphate (it's a molecule synthesis)}. ATP is the energy currency of cell and this process takes place in mitochondria Hence it's called as "the power house " of a cell
