This line is extracted from the famous story by Mr. Kushwant Singh- The Portrait of a lady. This is the description of the his grandmother in the story. This lines elaborates the physical attributes of the old lady. The writer in these lines focuses on the face of the lady. This line can be explained as:
The lady's "silver locks" is representative of her old age and experience of a lifetime. So, she gave less attention to form of her hair and did not care about her looks. Moving on, "pale and puckered face" portrays the grandmothers face which was light in complexion and filled with wrinkles. Later, after these lines, the writer calls her grandmother as a "winter landscape in the mountains" which denotes a emotional implication rather than literary.
