It is equal to the number of electrons in the outermost shell provided when the number is 4 or less.
So first of all, find the number of valence electrons.if the number is 4 or less than 4 then it is its valency.
If not then subtract the number of valence electrons from 8, you will get the result.
example: helium - number of electrons in the outermost shell is 2 ,so the valency is +2.
chlorine - number of electrons in the outermost shell is 7, so the valency is (8-7=) -1.since it is obtained after subtracting from 8.
hydrogen - number of electrons in the outermost shell is 1,so the valency is +1.
