The poem is a forceful expression of the evils of patriarchy. Aunt Jennifer's ringed fingers give us a clear picture as we realise that not only her finger is ringed but the difficulties in her life will continue to surround her. Even after death she has to conform to the customs of this society. The society and gender roles control her just as she used to control her needlework. These things never change and Aunt Jennifer will have to bear the weight to her grave.
