An element is regarded as pure because it is only composed of a single type of atom.
e.g. Sodium is only composed of ‘Na’ atoms
A compound contains two or more different types of atoms bonded together.
e.g. Water has 'H' and 'O' in a fixed ratio (2:1)
Sodium is monoatomic, and composed of a single element and is an element found on the periodic table of elements
Water is triatomic, consist of more than one element making it a compound.
