Carter faced a lot of difficulties in separating Tut's mummy from its coffin. First of all, he tried to use the intense heat of the Egyptian sun to loosen the resins. For several hours he set the mummy outside in blazing sunshine that heated it to 149 degrees Fahrenheit. Nothing budged. Finally, he had to chisel the consolidated material away from beneath the limbs and trunk before it was possible to raise the king’s remains.

All this procedure badly damaged King Tut’s mummy. Carter justified it saying if he had not secured the gold treasures, the thieves would have damaged the mummy beyond any restoration.
