In the starting of the lesson, 'The Last Lesson', the character Franz is portrayed as a normal ignorant child who does not want to learn French and we come to know this from the events like he had to prepare for the participles test but he had not, when he tries to confess and realize that how sorry he was for not learning how to read or write French. But when that he comes to know that it was his last lesson of French as his territory was now taken over, he feels sad about now he will be taking lessons of German instead of French.
