By saying that his grandmother could never have been pretty but she was beautiful, Kushwant Singh meant that his grandmother's outer appearance was not good as she always looked old and she was slightly bent. But, from her heart, she was a very beautiful woman who loved spending time with her grandson, village dogs, spinning wheel, in temple( where she read religious scriptures). Thus, she was not pretty from outside but inside she was a serene kind of person and hence she was internally beautiful. Moreover, every glitter is not gold.
