Traditionally, humans have manipulated genomes indirectly by controlling breeding and selecting offspring with desired traits. Genetic engineering involves the direct manipulation of one or more genes. Most often, a gene from another species is added to an organism's genome to give it the desired phenotype. There are three main methods of genetic engineering which are the plasmid method, the vector method, and the biolistic method. This method is the most commonly used method in genetic engineering. This method uses small circular pieces of a DNA molecule called plasmids.
