what is the difference between imparfait and passe compose?

Imparfait is used to describe an action in the past that was ongoing or habitual. Also to physically decsribe something or someone in the past imparfait is used.

Passé composé is for one time events in the past.

Example 

Nous sommes allés à Paris le mois dernier. Nous avons visité le musée d'Orsay.

Passé compose is used to highlight events that happened once.

Nous nous promenions dans le jardin près de la tour Eiffel chaque jour. La tour Eiffel était magnifique.

Here, imparfait is used to denote habitual action , something we did everyday. Also to describe Eiffel tower during the trip (past) we use imparfait.
