If it has an initial velocity u, and it accelerates, at a constant rate a, to a velocity v, in t seconds, then, by Newton's Second Law, F = ma. But since a = (v-u)/t, F = m (v - u)/t or F = (mv - mu)/t. This is saying that the force is equal to the rate of change of momentum, where momentum = mass x velocity. The first equation states that a Force is equal to Mass times Acceleration, or Newton's second law of motion. The second one states that Momentum (P) is equal to Mass times Velocity. This means that a force is the rate at which an object's momentum is changing over time.
